Pap Smears

What is a pap smear?

It is a screening test for cervical cancer by checking for any changes in the cells of the cervix and detecting any cancerous or abnormal cells that can lead to cervical cancer.

How important are pap smears?

A pap smear can save your life, as cervical cancer is 100% curable if detected early. Pap smears are also effective in detecting precancerous cells in the cervix, allowing the commencement of treatment before cancer has a chance to develop.

When should I start getting pap smears?

It is recommended that women start getting pap smears 3 years after becoming sexually active.

How should I prepare for a pap smear?

  • The ideal time to schedule a pap smear is around 10 days after the first day of your last period.
  • Doctors recommend avoiding the following two days before your test:
  • Having sexual intercourse.
  • Using tampons.
  • Using vaginal creams and medications.
  • Using vaginal sprays.
  • Douching (washing or cleaning out the vagina with water or other fluids, as it can increase risk of infections).

How often should I get one?

After your first pap smear, we recommend that you get one once a year.
